"In a world of dirty politics, backstabbing friends and unfaithful women, Bill Timmons discovers that being a Snake is more than a metaphor… but he’s unprepared for what will happen when he sheds his skin and the fangs start to show… and so is everyone else."
"Bill Timmons lives in a world where everyone is a snake, metaphorically speaking," says Clifford Meth, the story's creator and writer. "This is Kafkaesque horror."
In Snaked #1, Clifford Meth has introduced the threads of various characters' storylines, suggesting that a rich, multi-layered tapestry will be woven by the end of this mini-series. Snaked jumps backwards and forwards in time, starting on September 10th, 2001 in a psychiatric hospital. Above and beyond the omen of 9/11 hanging over this issue (which comes into play on the last page), Snaked #1 combines equal parts political thriller (with scenes featuring the current President Bush, the previous President Clinton, and the aspiring President Clinton), prison drama (with scenes that take place a month prior in Riker's Island Prison), and horror (also in Riker's Island prison). This tapestry is decorated with humor, sex and violence, including one scene where a would-be rapist's member gets... dismembered.
Snaked seems to be written for an audience looking to be challenged as well as entertained, which is something I don't see often enough in comics.
Rufus Dayglo's art reminds me of Jim Holdaway's art on the 1960's comic strip Modesty Blaise, with coloring that seems to be influenced by recent collaborator and cover artist Ashley Wood. After establishing himself as an artist in the pages of 2000 A.D., Rufus Dayglo has recently worked with Ashley Wood on Tank Girl: The Gifting and Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty for IDW - and he wears his influences well.
This is not the "clean" art style many people are used to seeing in mainstream comics, so much like the writing, your mileage may vary.
With that, this reader is in for the long haul.
